At the start of class today, I checked on how my experiment turned out from yesterday. The first thing I noticed was how much copper there was in the beaker. Instead of just turning the liquid a dark green color, it was completely orange because of the amount of copper in it. Another thing that I noticed was that unlike the silver that was easily shaken off the copper wire, the copper layer directly covering the nail didn't come off as easily. After I finished removing the nail from the solution, I started filtering the left over copper from the iron nitrate. If I wanted to, I could use the iron nitrate for another experiment, but there's only two more days of chemistry class left, so I decided on just finishing with this experiment. When the copper was completely filtered from the nitrate, I let it sit out to dry. This experiment has overall been extremely interesting to me. I've never before had the chance to conduct my own experiment, but I'm glad that I took this opportunity to. I was able to better understand the reactions and science that took place throughout this experiment. For me it was also cool to be able to do an experiment that alchemists used to conduct centuries ago. All in all, I've extremely enjoyed doing these two experiments and have loved learning some of the science behind them.
