Today our whole team went to Fiesta Island to launch all our rockets. Sophie and I were the second group to go. After the first group went we finished putting the rest of the stuff we needed in our rocket. Andrew cored our motor and made the ejection charge this morning so we put that inside our rocket, along with the recovery wadding inside to keep the parachute from flaming from the ejection charge. Then we added our parachute back into our rocket. During the launch I documented what happened while Sophie pressed the button for the launch and made sure everything was in order. Our launch didn't end up going quite as well as we were hoping though. As soon as the rocket started to go, it arced towards the water. It then stopped arcing and flew straight towards the water, close to where the other people were. Throughout the flight, the parachute didn't deploy, causing the rocket to crash into the sand at the end of its flight. After it landed we were able to look to find out why the parachute didn't work during the flight. We found that the reason it didn't work was because when the ejection charge went off and the recovery wadding didn't work. Since the wadding didn't work, the paper burned and set the parachute on fire. Then since the parachute was packed in the rocket body so tightly, it didn't come out when the ejection charge went off. The flames burnt off seven out of the eight of the strings attached to the parachute so it wouldn't have worked even if it deployed. Luckily none of the fins ripped off when it landed because I thought that would happen since they're made out thin strips of balsa wood. Even though the rocket didn't work quite as well we were hoping, it was still really cool to watch our rocket actually launch after all the hard work that we put into it. I really enjoyed making the rocket over the past weeks and was happy with how it turned out. Everything looked like what we were going for, which also was cool to see. If we ever launch our rocket again, we'll have to make sure the recovery paper actually works well and that we pack the parachute in better. Overall, this project has been extremely fun, even if our rocket didn't work quite like we were expecting it to.
