We're almost finished with chemistry so now it's time to reflect back on this past semester of class. This overall semester feels like it has been extremely successful for me. I've had the opportunity to work on some really cool projects and individual work, which I've enjoyed a lot. Everything I've done has turned out to be successful for the most part. Also, I feel that I've put a lot of effort into everything, which has probably greatly contributed to my successes.
One thing I learned throughout this semester is that if I'm really interested in something, I will work extremely hard and be even more productive than normal. I noticed this especially with the alchemy notes I've taken during the semester. As soon as Andrew gave me the thumbs up, I started the background research. While I took notes, I became even more interested in the topic than before. I've spent entire periods researching history about alchemy or famous experiments that have been tried in the past. During this I would write pages filled of notes about all the information I found during my research. This then pushed me to pursue an individual experiment about the transmutation and reaction of silver nitrate and copper. If I had started this individual project and found that I actually didn't enjoy studying alchemy as I thought I would have, I don't think I would have been as productive. I would have probably either tried to continue to work on it or continue to try to find a topic and project that I was more interested in. I'm really glad though that I followed my curiosity about alchemy because I've been able to find interesting information about it. While I've been researching, I've been able to understand more and gain a better background of the topic and conduct my own experiment. All in all, I've learned that if I'm especially interested in a topic I will pursue it to a greater extent than if I wasn't as interested in working on research and experimentation the topic.
Throughout this whole semester I've been driven by curiosity of everything we've done or created. Whether it's been rocketry or making a silica garden in class, I've been curious about the things we've done. One thing that I wasn't as curious about was the Virtual Reality goggles. I started out extremely interested about how they worked, but as the project continued on I became less curious. The reason I started to not be as interested in was because throughout the whole process, especially near the end, Sophie and I had to make so many adjustments to the goggles. We had to shorten them and try to adjust where the lenses were because the videos were extremely blurry. I think that during the adjustments I started to become less interested, which caused me to be less curious about them. Throughout the project, I still enjoyed the making of the goggles, I just wasn't as curious by the end.
Overall, this whole semester has gone very well for me. I've been able to work on an independent study and experiment on alchemy that I've wanted to work on for a while. As a class, we've worked on making actual working rocket fuel and rockets, and were able to semi-successfully launch them. I've found out that the more I'm interested in something, I will work on it to a greater extent than if I wasn't as into the topic. Throughout this past semester I've worked extremely hard on all the work I've done and have had some great opportunities.
